| Salquil and Nebaj lie in the northwestern highlands of Guatemala slightly northeast of the town of Huehuetenango. Nebaj is about 150 miles from the capital, Guatemala City. The condition of the roads makes it approximately a 6-hour drive. Salquil is 12 miles northwest or one hour further up the mountain from Nebaj.
Boasting a population of 65,000, Nebaj is the largest of the three Ixil municipalities. Nebaj Ixil is the name of the language spoken in Salquil and Nebaj.
